Shopwave was founded in 2013 by Ben Brown and Julian Polzella following the acquisition of their startup, VouChaCha, by Monetise (LSE) and Fiserv (NYSE). At the time of acquisition, VouChaCha worked with over 2,000 retailers, managing mobile coupon distribution and redemption. These customers all had one universal frustration: they hated their current POS platform and believed it was holding back their business. App integration by customers using NCR, Oracle and other legacy POS platforms was the most significant cause of frustration.
